Finished THE DRAFTER

My initial misgivings (that this book would be about a future that robbed people of free will) proved to be incomplete.  In a very complicated way, the major characters of this book are working against that.  This appears to be a trilogy, the third book of which is not out yet--I ordered the second.  Another odd thing...the second book in this series, The Operator is, on Amazon, tauted to be another Book 1.  I went to Kim Harrison's site to figure out that, no, it is Book 2.  Needless to say, I loved the book (since I ordered book 2.)  This sci-fi/ fantasy is mind bending and expanding which I enjoy.

I have now started #1 of Mary Jane Clark's Key News series.  About time.  I've read several books in this series--I am hopelessly out of order.  A professional man is dead.  We aren't told who, but I am beginning to suspect it is the Key Evening News anchor who has not showed up for the evening broadcast.  Eliza Blake, anchor of the morning news show, has been asked to fill in.  A scandalous article about her has appeared in a tabloid today, as well....

Finished THE HANDSOME MAN'S DE LUXE CAFE

It is relaxing to read these books that feature Mma. Ramotswe's intelligence and tact to solve, not only but often, women's concerns.  This time the concern may have been more serious than most.  I also love the calm pace of these books that explore the character's thought processes--often funny and illuminating.

I have now started book #1 in a new series by Kim Harrison, THE DRAFTER.  Kim wrote the Hollows series with Rachel Morgan which I loved.  She ended that series, an action for which I may never forgive her.  In the few chapters I have read of this book, I have misgivings.  I don't particularly like books in which government controls people, taking away their freedoms.  Hated 1984, avoided CATCH 22, BRAVE NEW WORLD, and THE HUNGER GAMES, (which reminded me of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery").  A drafter, it turns out, can change time.  It is a rewriting of time, but I haven't yet figured out if she can erase things that happened or just people's memory of them.  It smells of government control of people, not only against their will but without their knowledge.  I will continue because I love this writer, but I may not finish the trilogy...we will see.
